When taking out a mortgage, the bank examines all of the family's income. If the family includes a disabled person (child or adult) receiving National Insurance benefits, these benefits are considered part of the family's income for mortgage purposes.

The bank will sometimes request approval from social security for an allowance "under Chapter 9'.
